Will a Clean Colon Prolong Your Life?

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Gabe Mirkin, M.D. At the turn of the 20th century, Ilya Metchnikoff won a Nobel Prize for his discovery of how your body uses its white blood cells to fend off infections. He was one of the most respected scientists of his time. As he grew older, he set out to find out how he could prolong his life. He noticed that people who lived in the mountains of Hungary appear to live to a very old age. He knew that they ate yogurt every day and that yogurt is loaded with lactobacilli, bacteria that can grow in your intestinal tract. He felt that these good bacteria displaced bad bacteria that normally live in your intestines and secrete toxins that shorten your life. Dont laugh: the autointoxication theory was a respected scientific theory in the early 20th century. Many people took enemas regularly because they thought that it would clean out their colons and help to prolong their lives. The theory of autointoxication was that food that is not absorbed in the upper intestinal tract passes to your colon, where bacteria ferment it to form poisons that are absorbed into your bloodstream to shorten your life and even cause cancer. To prevent this, its practitioners taught that you should get enemas to rid yourself of the unabsorbed food. No scientific evidence supports this foolishness. While many of you will find this story funny, realize that enemas were part of John Harvey Kellogg’s treatments at the Sanitorium in Battle Creek, Michigan where he treated the Roosevelts, Fords, Chryslers, Rockefellers and other prominent people of the early 20th century. Some entrepreneurs who try to sell you colon cleansing products still promote these outdated ideas today. If you suffer from constipation, check with your doctor to see if you have thyroid disease or an obstruction. If you have no disease, the odds are overwhelming that you can be cured by avoiding white flour and bakery products, eating whole grains, beans, vegetables and fruit so you get lots of fiber; drinking enough fluids and getting plenty of exercise. Homemade Recipes for Hair and Skin Care

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Kaya Casper Over the past few months, I have been experimenting with making my own hair and skin care products. For many Black women with natural hair, finding products that work with our own unique hair type is a process that can involve a lot of time and money. I like to try my own blends and see what works. Its fun and affordable, and after some trial and error, has great results! My hair is all natural and highly textured. Its wiry, super coily, and tends to be dry. It is thin with a straighter texture around the front hairline, and extremely thick through the crown. My hair care goal is to increase moisture and softness, and make my hair easier to style. My skin is very dry and highly sensitive. I normally use all natural soaps, or the sensitive version of commercial soaps. I use shea butter for moisture, but I sometimes get lazy about applying it. I wanted a skin moisturizer that would make my skin soft and smell good, but as quickly and easily as possible. I already happen to have quite a few essential oils on hand, and have done pretty extensive research on which ingredients work well for natural hair and skin care. I have developed two products that have become part of my regular hair and skin care regimen: a water based natural hair moisturizer, and a skin moisturizer which doubles as an insect repellent and triples as an insect bite soother. Kayas Herbal Hair Cocktail Fill a four to eight ounce spray bottle with water. I use recycled spray bottles from Victorias Secret body sprays. They will give you a nice fine mist that doesnt soak your hair and drip all over. Distilled water is great, but I use tap water. Add a few drops of Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner. To that, add about a quarter teaspoon or five to six drops each of rosemary essential oil and cinnamon essential oil. If you like, add a few drops of grapefruit, vanilla, sweet orange, or lavender oil. You can use an eyedropper, or just eyeball it. I like to spray this mixture on sopping wet or towel blotted hair and allow to air dry. This is after either rinsing my hair with water, or washing my hair with conditioner. I wash with shampoo occasionally. If I havent rinsed or washed my hair on a particular day, I spray my cocktail on my dry hair and let it sit for five to 10 minutes while I take a shower or brush my teeth. Then I use my hands to finger comb my hair into place. If my hair is extra unruly, or Im wearing twists and want them to lay a certain way, I use bobby pins to pin it down while it dries. I also use this spritz as a styling aid when Im double strand twisting my hair. It makes my hair soft and easy to comb, and my twists come out soft and well defined. If you want to add extra moisture to this mix, add olive oil, vegetable glycerin, or aloe vera juice. Kayas Herbal Skin Cocktail This summer, the mosquitoes are biting like crazy. My skin is dry and itchy with the changing temperatures, and because I ran out of my usual soap and had to use a backup. So, I made myself a little mix. Fill up a spray bottle with water. Add a little bit of apple cider vinegar, rosemary essential oil, peppermint essential oil, and tea tree oil. Add some extra virgin olive oil; a teaspoon or two. I lightly spray the mixture over my entire body after my shower, while still standing in the tub. You want to spray your whole entire body, including your face if you like, without dousing the place. You can also spray this mixture on your hair. The great thing about this moisturizing body spray is that it also repels insects and soothes itchy insect bites. I spray it directly on bites if I get them, and it stops the itching almost immediately. It smells great at the same time. Safety Issues Essential oils are potent. If you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, nursing, on medication, or in a state of ill health, be extra careful with them. Even if none of the above are the case, you should still research any essential oil you use, and check with your doctor before trying something new. Try your new blends on a test area before using on your entire scalp or body. See if you notice any reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, or burning. If so, discontinue use. Never use essential oils full strength. A few drops in four to eight ounces of water is plenty. Start with blends of only one or two ingredients. This makes it easier to use the process of elimination if you have a bad reaction to something. Many essential oils have natural antiseptic properties, and retard bacterial growth. However, when you mix oil and water there is the potential for contamination. Applying products to your skin that contain bacteria or fungus can cause a lot of itching, inflammation, or worse. Store your concoctions in the refrigerator to lengthen their shelf life. A Honeymoon Like No Other

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Vlady Peters When it comes to choosing a honeymoon destination its usually sandy beaches and blue waters here, a historical sight there, or a luxurious pampering from morning till night somewhere else. The other day, though, looking through the various web sites, I came across a honeymoon destination which must surely be the most unique of them all. Its available only four months out of every year, and then it disappears from existence. Eight months later its back again. For four months again. The Ice Hotel of Quebec, Canada, welcomes guests only from January to April. The rest of the year the hotel ceases to exist because its whole structure is made from 400 tons of ice, and 12,000 tons of snow and needs the winter snows to bring it to life. A work of art in itself, it takes five weeks to erect, has impressive 18 foot ceilings, and walls adorned with original paintings made out of ice. It never repeats itself, so every stay is bound to amaze. The hotel includes an ice chapel in which the couple can pledge their troth, a cinema in which to while away an hour or two, and an exhibition room with ice exhibits such as paintings, statues, and furniture all made out of snow and ice. Apart from the fact that the materials used in the building of the hotel arent the usual brick and mortar, you can still sit around a real fire, though when snuggling into bed youll probably find a deer pelt and a sleeping bag made for two. And when toasting each other with champagne, youll be doing it with ice goblets instead of just the usual crystal. For something to do theres dog-sledding and all the other snow-oriented sports, as well as hot-air ballooning. At night you can visit the night club where your drink will never run out of ice. Needless to say, being a hotel completely made of ice, it is a bit chilly, so if you and your partner decide to exchange your wedding vows at the ice hotel, you might like to rent a fur cape or coat so that you can be warm as well as good-looking. And dont be worried about missing out on your wedding photographs or flowers, or limousines. The hotel might be made of ice, but it has a warm heart. Youll be provided with all the things you would normally expect on your wedding day. Just ask. Vlady Peters is an Australian Civil Marriage Celebrant authorised to perform marriages in Australia. How To Ask For A Raise

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By JoAnn Hines Asking for a raise is difficult under the best of circumstances. Asking for one in todays economy and business climate is down right brave. However, the fact remains that if you believe you deserve a raise, you need to make the request. Employees and employers are becoming savvy in the art of negotiation. Consequently, a little advance preparation can give you the edge you need in your negotiations. Use my seven-point checklist to ensure you are ready, willing, and able to negotiate your next pay increase. 1. Raise or Recognition? Are you sure its a raise you want and not just more recognition or better working conditions? It is imperative to have this worked out in your mind before beginning any negotiations. Have an idea of what you expect but be realistic. Large raises are no longer commonplace. Research detailing what is a reasonable percentage increase to expect can be done using general economic business condition. Statistics are available for the inflation rate and general business benchmarks. 2. You deserve a raise, why? Have you asked yourself why you deserve a raise? The answer should never be because you want or need one. Everyone falls in that category and a boss will not take you seriously without some warranted reasons. Its important to have a solid list of accomplishments to back up your request. This list should be similar in scope to a resume. If you don’t have a long list, prepare a record of your special skills, new responsibilities or exceptional performance notations that sets you apart from your coworkers. 3. Are company policies in your way? Does your company have policies regarding compensation? Read your employee handbook if you have one. (The compensation policy should be spelled out). Ask the company personnel director about compensation policies. Companies usually have guidelines such as annual raise rates, compensation percentages, etc. TIP: If these policies are dictated — specific raises at certain times — your boss may not have the latitude to award a compensation increase beyond these guiding principles. 4. Who gets paid what? Do you know industry standard for your type of position? If not, you need to do a little homework. Find our what other individuals are being paid in similar positions. Industry associations generally have studies available for most positions. Additionally, there are many salary studies available on the Internet. What if you find out that a coworker is making more than you? Should you approach your superior? This is a tricky issue especially since it is considered a no-no to talk about salary with coworkers. If you do find out inadvertently, its important not to use the other workers name or the fact that you know they are making more money in your negotiations. This sets an adversarial tone to your negotiation. You are better off with strong industry statistics detailing what the going market is. TIP: A good way to benchmark your worth is to go on an interview. (Never turn down an interview opportunity). This is a very simple way to find out what the going salary scale is for someone with your qualifications. TIP: If your research unveils that you are at the top of your pay grade, be prepared for a no response to your request for a raise and work out an alternative plan. 5. To ask or not to ask? When should you ask for a raise? Timing is everything, yet there is no right time to ask for a raise. Here are a few things to consider: External market conditions; Your boss temperament; Company policies restricting raises and promotions; Your current workload, performance, success; Upcoming annual evaluation. Ascertain which of the above considerations will make the biggest impact on your request. If companies polices are cast in stone, its best to set the stage in advance and ask for a raise before an annual review. If compensation policies are relatively informal, then asking for a raise after a major accomplishment might be most beneficial. Tip: It is not an accomplishment if only you are aware of it personally. Make others aware of your success. Plan a visibility campaign with the same strategy you set in asking for a raise. Try to schedule an appointment during the least stressful time of the day. Work toward getting at least 30 minutes to an hour to state your case. Check out your boss schedule first. Don’t schedule your meeting before an important presentation or when he/she returns from a lengthy business trip. If the general company economy will not allow a raise at this time, ask when the freeze will be lifted. 6. Objection! Have you prepared for your boss objections?Chances are your boss will automatically say no. Dont accept that right off the bat. The important part of the negotiation is that you clearly demonstrate why you should receive a raise. If no means no, be prepared to suggest alternatives. Part of negotiation is compromise. Be prepared and present alternative perks you would like to receive if an increase in wage is out of the question. Take ammunition. Use your project load or performance ratings to your advantage. If you have a letter from a customer, supplier or other senior level rep, take it with you to the meeting. Demonstrate your worth! Tip: Never give an ultimatum, demand or threat unless you have another job already waiting. 7. Practice asking. Have you prepared a dry run with business associates or colleagues? This is a little bit like role-playing. Have someone you trust (not a coworker) play your boss. Ask them to give you a hard time and be the antagonist. Take your time. Make sure you get a chance to state your case. An outsider is likely to see a weakness or an area that you have missed. Listen to yourself and what the role player hears. When you select a role-playing partner, ensure that they are aware that this is important to you. A good way to get the juices flowing is to prepare some opening questions for the role player to give to you. Such as: Give me a one-minute sound byte why you deserve of a raise. Our company is in a serious economic downturn, how can I justify and increase at this time? What sets you apart from your colleagues and coworkers? Following these guidelines may not send you into the next tax bracket, but they will improve your chances of getting that well-deserved raise. Be certain you are prepared for the negotiations and make a solid case for yourself. Remember, you are talking about your compensation. Ensure you have the facts and present them well. Do not easily accept no for an answer. Negotiate, compromise, find the middle ground and strategize. If it seems to be that the ONLY answer at this time is no, find out why. Is it the economy or your performance? Work out the best possible solution to sell yourself and increase your worth when that obstacle is removed. Then, revisit these seven tips and try again! Discover the easy way to make yourself stand out from others. Car Loan Financing - Finding a Good Lender

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Carrie_Reeder]Carrie Reeder When purchasing a new vehicle, most people dont have enough funds to pay cash and must obtain car loan financing. After deciding which type of car to buy, the next important step is finding a good lender. While you may have no problem qualifying for car loan financing, it is important to shop around before deciding upon a lender. You can do this by either visiting local banks in your area or by researching car loan financing offers online. If you have good credit, you may even want to decide upon a lender before visiting the car dealership. This way you can get pre-approved for a set amount of cash. Once you have been preapproved, you know how much you have to spend. You wont be as tempted to look at cars that are out of your price range. If dealers know you have already been approved for a loan, they may be more willing to negotiate a deal. Since most salespeople work on commission, they will do their best to accommodate someone who has already been approved for a loan. Down Payment and Interest Rates Your initial down payment will affect what type of car loan financing you receive. The greater your down payment, the lower rate of interest you can expect to be offered. Auto lenders will consider you less of a risk if you invest more in the vehicle upfront. It may be very tempting to apply for car loan financing while a dealership has a no money down offer, but you should be aware that the interest rate terms might be much higher. Length of Payment Terms Until recently the longest term for car loan financing was sixty months. Today dealers have started to offer extended payments plans of seventy-two and eighty-four months. This has caused consumers to purchase more expensive vehicles, cars that would generally be out of their price range. While you may dream of buying a $40,000 dollar SUV, it is probably not a good idea unless you can pay for it within a five year time frame. Remember that once the warranty period is over, you are responsible for all repairs. People who finance their cars over a seven-year period often end up owing more on the car than it is actually worth. Lose Weight - Fast Diet Plan

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Apiwat Songworn Get ready to lose 10 pounds! By paying attention to the amount of food you eat, eliminating unnecessary sugar and fat from your foods and making sure you include absolutely delicious meals and snacks to keep your taste buds happy. Use this easy-to-follow and super healthy diet plan to lose the first 10, the last 10, or any 10 in between! Because it’s a balanced and flexible program, you can stay on this diet as long as it takes. Top Fast Secrets * Keep track of everything you eat and drink. No need to estimate calories - just write down the type of food or beverage and the amount. * Cut your fat intake in half, that means half as much margarine or butter on toast, vegetables and your muffin, half the mayonnaise on your sandwich, and half the oil in the pan when you saute foods. You get the idea! * Limit the sugar treats to three times per week maximum. * Include good sources of protein at meal, chicken, fish, legumes, peanut, cottage cheese, eggs or yogurt. * Eat at least one meatless lunch and dinner each week to reduce fat, increase fiber, and get yourself into the habit of building meals around whole grains, beans and vegetables. * If you’re not currently using skim milk, go down to the level of fat content in the milk you use. For example, if you currently use two percent, use only one percent. If you insist on whole milk, try two percent. * Eat at least two servings of fresh fruit every day. Choose whatever type of fruit is in season.* Instead of fruit juice for breakfast or snack, drink water. Add a slice of lemon or lime for zest. * Include two servings of vegetables with lunch and dinner, for a total of at least four servings per day. * Choose one to two servings of foods made from whole grains with every meal. * Shut off the TV whenever you eat - that includes meals and snacks. Studies show that we automatically eat larger portions when we snack in front of the tube, and typically those foods are high in fat and sugar, which means excess calories! * Choose calories you can chew - that means only calorie-free beverages (except for milk) Sodas are loaded with empty calories, and fruit juices provide less fiber and vitamins per calorie than the fruit they’re made from. * Plan ahead for meals and snacks so you know exactly what you plan to eat. Last-minute choice tends to be higher in calories and lower in satisfaction. Best Antidepressants

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Max_Bellamy] Max Bellamy Although no Antidepressant is ideal, St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) extract has proved its Antidepressant efficacy to the market that encourages effectiveness. It is a medicinal herb of centuries-old therapeutic stand, and has been named “arnica of the nerves” because of its therapeutic benefit to the nervous diseases. Its benefit of improving mood and quality of sleep are the reasons for its use in mild to moderate depression. The chemical constituents that may be responsible for the safe Antidepressant action of this widely used Antidepressant are hypericin, pseudohypericin, hyperforin, naphtodianthrones, flavonoids, phenylpropanes, biflavones, terpene and sesquiterpene oils, tannins, xanthones, phloroglucinols, and essential oils. Many of the pharmacological activities appear to be present because of the presence of hypericin and flavonoid constituents. St. Johns wort inhibits the re-uptake of serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine. It also inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO), a complex enzyme system that metabolizes excess serotonin and epinephrine. This interference with the re-uptake of neurotransmitters and inhibition of MAO is believed to underline its Antidepressant activity. An evidence of its efficiency and safety was presented by a meta-analysis that included 23 randomized trials and concluded that, in efficiency, St. Johns wort is superior to placebo and is comparable to TCAs and SSRIs. Also, it has lower rates of adverse events as compared to its competition. The most commonly associated side effects with the use of St. Johns wort include fatigue, sedation, restlessness, anxiety, headache, dizziness, dry mouth, gastrointestinal symptoms, and skin reactions. Its side effects portray it as one of the safest available Antidepressant option. St. Johns wort is thus a widely used, natural, effective and safe option to depress depression. How to Turn Around Worrying About What Others Think

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Barbara Rose, Ph.D. I know what it feels like to worry about what other people will think of me. I used to feel tremendous fear and anxiety during that phase of my life when I was facing a choice of either moving forward into the field of broadcast journalism or into the field I am in now and will be in for as long as I live. Fear of what others will think has prevented many people I have spoken with from following their own truth. Instead, they held themselves back and remained unfulfilled inside. Nobody can force you to make the positive changes you would like to make in your life. Nobody can make your choices for you. Did you ever stop to consider whether all of the people whose opinions you may be concerned about ever come to you asking for guidance about their lives? Think about it for a moment. Who are “they” to begin with? Family, friends, neighbors, people who live in your part of the world? And what do they think? What if they told you they think the direction you are contemplating is fantastic and wonderful? What then? Would you then have a new worry about success or failure? Would you worry about whether you were good enough in your field of service? You see, all of the abovewhat people think, what you think, success, failure, being good enoughit all comes from the passion you feel about what you are doing, being, creating, and expressing from your heart. That is all that matters. Suppose you love to teach children. Does this mean that you need to receive the award for most popular teacher every year or a Ph.D. in education to make a true and lasting difference for the children? Dont people and children feel your care? Yes, they do. Dont you feel it when someone truly cares about you? Yes, you do. Do they need a certain title or a certain appearance to touch your heart and brighten your day? No, they dont. What matters most is purity of motive. Moreover, that is what you really feel coming from other people, their motives. If your motive is pure and from your heart, there is no such thing as failure. Whether a business succeeds or a financial venture profits has nothing to do with the goodness in your heart or with your true worth. No one gave you this goodness and no one can ever take it away. The feelings you have about yourself are completely based on how you view yourself. To transform your self-view to match your ideal, you can come to trust and rely on the process of receiving the higher perspective from God through your writings. Trusting the Process It does take time and many small experiences to build that trust. As you experience receiving new realizations, support, and the pure views you can have about yourself along with how to integrate these pure views, you will come to find that this process is so pure, and so priceless. It is important for you to realize that your current level of consciousness, those views that you currently hold about yourself truly cannot be transformed at the same level of awareness that you have now. If that were possible, then you would have already transformed your views of self, and you would feel pure self-love and acceptance. To receive the higher view or perspective, all you need to do is write from your heart and ask your Higher Self to give it to you. Then, re-read what you receive. Simple Methods To Achieving Rapid Weight Loss Using Proven Dieting Techniques

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By James Hegarty Being overweight has many effects on any person who is overweight. On the social side it can affect personal esteem, social interaction and on the health side it can affect your internal organs especially the heart and lead to other unhealthy complications. Most people searching to loose weight are doing this based on either or all of these reasons. To help with overweight it is best to start a diet or weight loss program or regimen. Some things to put into consideration when doing this are any health factors which might affect a diet loss regimen. After this has been put into consideration there are a few very important tips that should be followed for effective results. 1. Watch what you eat The biggest enemy of dieting and weight loss is fried foods. You would do well to stay clear away from fried food if you want to avoid those Trans fat which are contained most oil that is used in frying food. A better option for individuals or anyone for that matter who wants to loose weight is to eat grilled or baked food as they contain less bad fats. 2. Eat more fiber Fiber is good for many reasons but for the purposes of loosing weight it does two things. One it fills you up quickly thereby helping you eat less. Two it helps the body burn more fat by stimulating and regulating how much body fat the body should burn. 3. Set reasonable goals Focus and get your mind ready for the challenges, expectations and goals which you want to achieve. This is important as without the right mindset this will not be achieved. To many times people start a diet program and dont complete it due to a lack of focus on the expected result which they want to achieve. 4. Drink plenty of fluids. A lot of people dont know this but weight loss really depends on the ability of the body to loose and flush out wastes. This is a major reason why the body needs lots of liquids as well as for the organs to function properly. It is good to remember the body is mainly composed of water. It is a good idea to drink at least a minimum of 6 glasses of water. The optimum amount though is eight glasses. 5. Hear your body One of the most overlooked facts is that no two bodies are similar. Different bodies metabolize at different speeds and so the rate of metabolism will vary amongst different individuals. The reason this is important is that to achieve weight loss goals it is important to go at your own bodies speed. Also different exercises do not work the same with everyone, although this does not mean it should be ignored. It just means that individuals should do them at their own pace and possibly vary them with other exercises to gain range and make up for what they cannot do. A Weight loss or dieting program consists of many facets from mindset all the way to bodily metabolism and even supplements to enhance body metabolism. All this is best achieved by following a good diet program that encompasses all of these and more that is required to achieve complete success. How and When to Use a Wedding Website

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Mayoor Patel There is one thing you have access to as a bride that your parents and grandparents never had: a wedding website. Yes, that is right: you can start a new family tradition. After your photographer finishes developing the hundreds and hundreds of pictures that are captured for your wedding, you can ask him to also put them together on a website. More and more photographers are now offering this as an additional service. The possibilities for the wedding website are truly limitless. They can have everything starting from the engagement announcement, and can include the gift registry, wedding announcement, and even directions to the church! With a little technical skill, pages could be added to the wedding website to include pictures of the brides dress, the wedding ceremony, reception, and honeymoon! Even photographs of the guests and gifts could be added later! Another very nice option for a wedding website is to have an online guest book which is relatively easy to install. All of your guests could record their sentiments after the wedding and their well wishes for your future. Why stop at an old fashioned photo album, when you could be the very first couple in either family to have your very own wedding website! To have the very latest technology, you could include flash presentations with audio and visual from the wedding, the reception, the guests, etc. In addition to the photos your hired photographer takes, you can also ask your friends and family members to add any pictures they may have taken to the wedding. They can simply email them to you or upload them to the website through a function you add. A wedding website would be such an appropriate testimonial of the happiest day of your lives and the beginning of your life together as a couple! This would also be a wonderful way to share your day with relatives and friends who live too far away or who otherwise will not be able to attend your wedding. And for those who cannot make it to your actual wedding, how great would it be if they could simply access the whole event, including videos, pictures, and a guestbook, online, reliving the events through the eyes of the photographer? That would certainly be better than sending them a card that said sorry you could not make it with a single picture from the wedding. So consider putting your wedding, videos and all, up on the Internet!
